Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija 'pere April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995) was an American Tejano singer. Selena was known as the "Queen Tejano music", her contribution to music and fashion have made her one of the most well-known Mexican-American entertainers ever. Billboard magazine placed her third on their 2020 list of "Greatest Latino Artists" according to Latin album releases and Latin chart of songs. Media outlets called her the "Tejano Madonna" for her style of clothing. She is also among the most influential Latin performers of all time , and is believed to have helped propel the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest of the Quintanilla family, she made her debut in the world of music as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, that also included her older siblings A.B. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. They were frequently criticised during the 1980s and she was refused bookings at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, a male-dominated genre. However, her popularity grew when she was awarded the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, which she won nine times in succession. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her self-titled debut album the same year, while her brother became her principal music producer and songwriter.Selena released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992), which peaked at top of the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight months in a row. It was hailed by critics of music as the "breakthrough" album of her career. "Como la Flor", one of its singles, became her most loved hero song. Live! Live! In 1994, she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the top-selling Latin albums sold in the United States. It was widely praised as being the catalyst for Tejano music's first period of commercialization and it became one of the most sought-after Latin music subgenres at the time.
